Why there and not here? Why one revolution, but not the other?

[ She waves her hand. ]

There is if you create it. Bet there wasn't a revolution back home till you made that one, either. So why was it worth making a revolution at home, but it's not worth it to make one here? People are people in every world. They need to be freed in every world.

[ Fine. ]

It'll happen eventually.

[ She idly lifts her leg and points her toe - an incongruously girlish gesture that clashes oddly with her appearance. ]

It happens for everyone.

Yeah. Going home. It's inevitable.

After having gone home. Besides, it's not as though anything happens at home while we're here. You're basically wriggling around with anxiety, trying to wake from a dream that you won't even remember once you've woken.

[ Her expression turns a little bit guarded. ]

I've only got speculation.

[ A small sigh. ]

A powerful spirit, with the ability to break down the borders between dimensions, is going to be very old. And therefore bored. I think we were chosen for our ability to entertain.

[ She nods. ]

Pretty much. [ And then, firmly: ] Though even if that is true, we don't know what this spirit is entertained by. So don't start thinking that you'll get sent home if you just lock yourself in a room and sit motionless until you die of starvation or something stupid like that.

[ Kitty relaxes a little. That was honestly what had made Kitty reluctant to speak, because, frankly: yes. Darlene looks absolutely like the sort of person who would commit suicide, just as long as that suicide would spite someone. ]

That's what I think. Yeah. A spirit mixed with technology - because the Porter was able to pull in people from other dimensions before the government lost control of it. So it was a piece of technology, the spirit came in and inhabited it and took control - but I think it probably got trapped there, too.

[ With more than a hint of dryness: ]

No, that'd be silly. How would any of us ever feel empathy for a creature trapped in another world and given an enormous amount of power that lashes out at others because of fear and frustration?

[ She shrugs. ]

Anyway. It makes the problem hard to attack. Something that's both magical and technological tests everyone's expertise.

[ Another shrug, and she gives a broad gesture: ]

Well. You're perfectly welcome to the problem, Darla. Just please don't cock it up and get us all sent home, will you? There are plenty of people who don't particularly want to go back.

[ Her mouth twists up in a bitter, ironic smile, and she glances away. ]

Shorter rather than longer.

[ Anyway. ]

Home wasn't ever a good place for me. So I haven't got any love for it, and it's not like old ex-revolutionaries have ever done a great lot of good by hanging around. Just look at France, or the Soviet Union. I've got people I love here. I've got a life. And I've got possibilities.
