[ but beneath the immediate resentment at having to contact her via the mental link and the narrowing focus of the job they're going to be pulling is actual concern. enough that this conversation doubles as a check in. ]

[Darlene's undercurrent of irritation pushes back, jives pretty well with his. It is effed up that she has to suffer this sort of thing. Way more invasive than a text, impossible to just leave on read and not respond until you feel good and ready, and all the while knowing that there is some inadequate af wall between you and like thirty other people.

Well. Not totally inadequate. Darlene has been working on hers.]

( You are brain texting me right now which is like busting in and sitting butt-ass naked on my couch, okay, we are way past the pleasantries. Spill it. What's up. )

[This is about the job, she can tell. And that is way important.]

( I'm not happy about it either, sweetheart. )

[ Seth transparently hates it. No matter how he tries to wall his emotions away, the obvious resentment over this method of communication leaks out to underscore everything else passing between them. ]

( Listen, Richie and I got a mark. You think you can be ready to get to work tomorrow? )

[ Everyone else would be looking the other way. They'd have the time they needed to let Darlene make good on her promise to get elbow deep in alien information. ]

[Called it. The mark. The language is so old-timey conman as to be almost endearing, and Darlene's interest is shot through with a crinkled silvery thread of amusement. And eager interest, of course--and all of it almost enough to bury how annoyed she still is at being called sweetheart.]

( Bet your ass I'll be ready. )

[Similar to their previous conversation, Darlene's swaggering conviction that has a vibrant shock of truth to it.]

( Do I get a name or is this going to be an early b-day surprise for me? )

[ When you're raised by old-timey conmen, certain things stick, Darlene!!!!

But her excitement is a mirror of his own. This mission is far from ideal in so many ways, but Seth enjoys pulling off a plan. They're so close to enacting this one, and it's set to go smoothly. Seth can't quell just how much he enjoys that. ]

( Call it a surprise. We'll stick a bow on him for you. )

Well, kind of really. Appreciates would maybe be a better word for it. The recursive hype she gets off of Seth is a nice cycle-back of her own hype, like feeding like.]

( We do something really special with this and I might actually start to mean that. )

[ They'd get something out of this. Seth didn't see how they couldn't. It seemed like such a slam dunk, almost a cake walk with Richie's newfound skill in the mix. Maybe Darlene's excitement is ramping up Seth's confidence, but he isn't looking too closely at it. ]

( I'll be sure to tell my brother we have to impress on the job tomorrow. )
